Abstract

Background: The high intensity of rice field rat (Rattus argentiventer) infestations in Karangpule Village, Sruweng District, Kebumen Regency, has significantly reduced agricultural yields and necessitated an environmentally friendly control strategy. Objectives: This community-based applied research aims to design, construct, and install pagupon (barn owl houses) as a biological control method by utilizing barn owls (Tyto alba) as a natural predators. Methods: The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with Participatory Action Research (PAR) and field observations involving 20 local farmers. The implementation stages included field surveys, community education, pagupon construction, installation in strategic locations in rice fields, and initial monitoring. Results: Two pagupon units were successfully built and installed, with early signs of barn owl presence observed in one unit within two weeks. Farmers reported a decreased rat activity within a ±50-meter radius of the occupied pagupon. Community participation played a crucial role in the program's success, despite challenges included limited public awareness, funding constraints, and potential nest fighting by other animals. Conclusions: Findings indicate that pagupon utilization is an effective, sustainable, and eco-friendly alternative to chemical rodenticides, aligning with sustainable agriculture principles. The long-term success of this program will depend heavily on continuous education, monitoring, and policy support from local authorities.
