Abstract

Food self-sufficiency is essential to ensure access to nutritious food and improve quality of life, especially in rural areas facing environmental issues such as household plastic waste. This community service initiative implemented an aquaponics system using recycled materials as a sustainable approach to food production and waste management in Karangbenda Village, Adipala District, Cilacap Regency. Using a qualitative participatory observation method, the program provided educational sessions and practical training for residents on aquaponics design and management. The system combined catfish farming with water spinach cultivation in repurposed gallon containers (akudalon), maximizing resource efficiency and reducing costs. Findings revealed improved knowledge and skills among participants, enabling independent application of aquaponics at home. Evaluation results showed that the average pretest score was 55.31, increasing to 81.56 after the training, representing a 47.45% improvement. The catfish–water spinach combination proved efficient, with short harvest cycles that generated both economic and nutritional benefits. Additionally, the program promoted environmental awareness by encouraging the reuse of plastic waste as planting media. These outcomes demonstrate that recycled-media-based aquaponics offers a practical, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly model for enhancing community food self-sufficiency.
