Abstract

Kuripan Kidul village in Cilacap, Central Java, faces a stunting problem caused by chronic child malnutrition.  Although most of the villagers are farmers and have utilized their yards for organic crop cultivation for food security, the high stunting rate requires an effective solution.  Therefore, the BUDIKDAMBER (budidaya ikan dalam ember) program was chosen as an intervention, as well as become a creative economic venture for families, utilize local resources and waste (used gallons), and increase community knowledge and skills in overcoming stunting problems. The methodology combined participatory and experiential learning approaches, including community counseling, hands-on demonstrations, knowledge evaluation (pre-test and post-test), and semi-structured interviews.  A total of 10 participants from five hamlets (dusun) joined the program. Evaluation was conducted through comparison of pre-test and post-test results, as well as qualitative interviews with five selected participants. The results show that the BUDIKDAMBER program successfully improved participants' knowledge and practical skills, and motivated them to adopt and sustain this innovative food production method. The approach used proved effective in transferring knowledge and skills in a practical manner, as well as encouraging active community involvement.
