Abstract

Plastic waste management in rural areas still faces significant challenges, primarily due to indiscriminate disposal practices and limited recycling facilities. The “Blok Harapan: Teras Limbah” work program implemented by KKN students from Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto in Gunungtiga Village aims to reduce environmental pollution while increasing the economic value of plastic waste through innovative paving block production using plastic waste. Activities included outreach, collection and sorting of plastic waste, technical training in paving block production using a mixture of sand and used oil, and product trials in the village environment. The training, attended by 32 participants, demonstrated a positive response and high enthusiasm from the community, characterized by active involvement during the practical process and interest in producing paving blocks independently. The resulting paving blocks have a dense texture, a darker color than conventional paving blocks, and good water resistance potential. This program demonstrates that simple technology can be implemented at the village level to reduce the volume of plastic waste, provide alternative environmentally friendly construction materials, and encourage community-based small business opportunities.
