Utilization of Household Cooking Oil Waste into Environmentally Friendly Aromatherapy Candles in Sodong Basari Village
Keywords:

Used cooking oil, which has been repeatedly used for frying, poses significant health and environmental risks. Its content of free fatty acids, aldehydes, ketones, and free radicals can trigger degenerative diseases such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, and cancer, while improper disposal contaminates soil and water, causes drainage blockages, reduces oxygen levels, and damages ecosystems. Sodong Basari Village, Belik Subdistrict, Pemalang Regency, Central Java, as a community with high household activity, produces a considerable amount of used cooking oil that has not been optimally utilized. This Community Service Program (KKN) aims to improve local knowledge and skills in processing used cooking oil into environmentally friendly aromatherapy candles with economic value. The activities included socialization on the hazards of used cooking oil, training on purification techniques using activated charcoal and bleaching earth, and hands-on practice in making aromatherapy candles with artificial essential aromas from pandan leaf extract and vanilla essence as fragrance. The evaluation was conducted through pre- and post-tests as well as observation of participants’ skills. Results indicated an average 75% increase in knowledge and over 70% proficiency in candle-making, producing items with distinctive scents, good burning quality, and market potential. In conclusion, this training is effective as a solution for managing household used cooking oil waste while creating creative business opportunities for the residents of Sodong Basari Village.
