Abstract

The Close Your Mouth Movement (GTM) is one of the eating behavior problems in toddlers that can potentially interfere with nutritional intake and increase the risk of stunting. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of practical guidelines for handling GTM in reducing the incidence of GTM and preventing stunting in toddlers. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest approach with a control group. The sample consisted of 22 young mothers aged 30–40 years, selected through complete sampling. The GTM intervention was implemented through education and the application of practical guidelines covering food variety strategies, responsive feeding techniques, and regular meal scheduling. Food variety can be achieved by presenting appealing shapes and colors to increase children's interest. This approach is expected to stimulate children's appetite and reduce the incidence of GTM. The results of the post- and pre-intervention assessments, analyzed using a Paired Samples t-test, showed a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (t = -12.410; p < 0.05), with an average increase of 2 points in the intervention group. These findings demonstrate that the practical guidelines for managing GTM are effective in reducing GTM incidents and have the potential to prevent stunting in infants. In conclusion, the practical guidelines for managing GTM have proven effective in increasing mothers' understanding of GTM in infants and have the potential to become a preventive strategy against stunting that can be applied.
